coats

Last weekend, both Isaac and Jeremiah spoke up about "needing" a new coat for winter.  Winter in Iowa is ugly, and brutal, and unpredictable.  We can go days without seeing the sunshine through a thick and cloudy sky.  The wind is like ice.  We see more icy rain than snow some weeks.....and its dark.  The trees are bare.  It is absolutely cold.  For about 4 months.

Roger said they should check the closets and storage tubs because they had coats last year.  Jeremiah's eyes welled up with tears.  He really likes new things. He had found a coat on sale....and I wanted him to have it.  I dug up the old coat....that he hates.....and we just moved on.  Isaac forgot he had a winter coat and said he would try it on when we dug it out.  Precious gladly wore last years coat and also tried on one that Jeremiah hated 2 years ago and said that would work.  Josiah loved his walmart coat for $14.99.

Grace got in the car for school yesterday and it was 34 degrees out and she shivered without a coat.  "Grace.  Don't you have a coat?"  "No.  I need to buy one".  Grace may not live anywhere cold next year.  Grace should not spend her parents money on a winter coat for 4 months in Iowa.  "Grace....let me go see if we have one you can use...."  I found Claire's black Columbia coat that we gave her for Christmas (because it was a want, not a need) 2 years ago.  Claire didn't wear it much last year so I told Grace she could have it for the winter.  Grace was so grateful.  It fit.  It was warm.  Claire came up from the basement today.  No coat.  Her dance coat was being be-dazzled.....and she didn't have another coat.  Seriously?  Seriously?

After school when the teens got out at noon, we went to Walmart.  Claire found a coat, not a heavy winter one, but a light car coat......and we will go shopping in a couple weeks when we go to Omaha for dance.  She may get one, if not 2 coats for winter.

I have a few coats to donate to one of the coat drives....and I have a few on my shopping list.  The season has changed and coats are the order of the day.
