Resilient

-
by definition, "resilient" means able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions, able to recoil or spring back into shape after bending, stretching or being compressed.  In my work with families of young children, we often talk about how resilient children are.  They can withstand so much hardship and, if given the right kinds of attention and love and affection, they can recover and grow well.  Tonight I wish to claim this word and ask that the Lord apply it especially to the senior high school class of 2020.  Isaac is a senior.  He doesn't really even know what he doesn't get to experience, but many of us do.  Finishing your high school year as a group, as a unified body that shares their own culture of conversation, hopes, dreams, memories.....it just matters in a unique way.  If they arrange class reunions (and I so hope they do) they will always remember that they did not get to finish together.  They did not get to leave...

4 Calling Birds

 On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, 4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree......see now you are singing it too aren't you?! The 4 calling birds are said to represent the 4 gospels of the new testement.  Mathew, Mark, Luke and John.  All 4 gospels share mostly the same stories of Jesus birth, life, and death.  Each author shares their own perspective of the stories....because perspective matters.   Synonyms for perspective are the following:  angle, aspect, attitude, context, mindset, prospect, viewpoint.   What is my perspective with 10 days left until Christmas?  What angle will I take to approach the next 10 days?  What aspect of this advent season will I take with me into December 26 and ultimately into the next new year?  What is my attitude at home?  At work?  When I am faced with challenges and adversity?   If something makes me sad and frustr...

worst holiday ever

4 more hours and Halloween is over for another year.  Yep, I do actually count down the hours.  I don't want to make a federal issue out of it, mostly because the darkness of it doesn't deserve that much media attention.....but the day is just a burden to me.  Spiritual warfare is as real to me as dinner on the table and conversation with friends.  The demons would love to make us think that they aren't so bad......by dressing our cute kids up as evil horrific beings on Halloween and going out to beg for candy.  Blech. Because I have this attitude, my kids never get cute costumes.  The early years, when they want to go trick or treating are painful because they don't look "fun".  well.  yeah.  They don't because I hate this holiday and don't want to invest my creative energy, time or money on it!  I set out a bowl of candy every year.....this year not one child came to the door.  There you have it.
